While the air quality deteriorates every year and millions of lives are put at risk, individual attitude towards air pollution remains obscure. Here we propose a hypothesis of projection bias in attitude towards air pollution, whereby current exposure to air pollution affects their estimated attitudes and behavioral response towards air pollution. In the first study, we conduct a survey on the perception of a wide range of risks such as air pollution, food security and unemployment etc. We find that survey respondents on a more polluted days express greater concern about air pollution five years later, compared to those on a less polluted days, and pollution has no effect on the risk perception in other domains. In the second study, we solicit donations to a pollution prevention charity and a food support charity in a field experiment. We find that people donate more money to the pollution prevention charity on a more polluted days than less polluted days, and pollution has no effect on their donation to the food support charity. Overall, these results support the projection bias hypothesis and point to the awareness of air pollution as an important step towards improving air quality.
