The “China (Shenzhen) Summit on Industry Development” hosted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and co-organized by Antai College of Economics and Management (ACEM), SJTU and Shenzhen Institute of Industry Research, SJTU was held in Shenzhen Bay of Science and Technology Ecological Park on Aug 27, 2022. At the summit, Shenzhen Institute of Industry Research of SJTU was officially inaugurated. The Shenzhen Institute of Industry Research of SJTU is the main strategic part of the SJTU in Greater Bay Area (Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao-Shenzhen-Zhuhai), one of the most open and economically dynamic regions in China. It is expected to be an important window and innovation platform for the ACEM to base itself on Greater Bay Area with a ripple effect on the whole world, which relies upon the compelling research strengths of ACEM and Institute of Industry Research of SJTU to closely align itself with the high-quality development needs for the digital economy, intelligent manufacturing, financial technology, health care, intelligent energy and other important industry sectors of Greater Bay Area by focusing on the four strategic objectives of industry research, talent training, social service and brand expansion, as well as to shape an integrated and collaborative innovation system of “government, industry, academics, research, innovation and investment” based on the industry research as the hub, so as to become a top science and innovation think tank and a highland for cultivating leading talents based on the Greater Bay Area.

Li Zhuowen, Deputy Director-General of the People’s Government of Shenzhen Municipality, Guangdong Province, and Gu Feng, Executive Deputy Party Secretary of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, delivered speeches at the Summit, expressing a sincere hope that Shenzhen Institute of Industry Research of SJTU would take root in Shenzhen and give full play as an industry think tank and entrepreneurship platform, so as to provide strong intellectual support for the development of both the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Shenzhen Pilot Demonstration Area. In addition, they both expected that Shenzhen Institute of Industry Research of SJTU would build a bridge for complementary development between the Greater Bay Area and the Yangtze River Delta while establishing a think-tank-type scientific research and innovation platform to inspire the new momentum for the application of advances in science and technology and make greater contributions to the development of management theories and practices and the prosperity of national and local economy.
In the keynote speech session, scholars and experts from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and alumni representatives of SJTU discussed the status quo of China’s industrial economy and the future development trend of China’s industry, and conducted in-depth exchanges on issues such as how to deepen the synergetic cooperation in the field of industry research and further promote the development of China’s industry.

Chen Fangruo, Dean of Antai College and Shenzhen Institute of Industry Research of SJTU introduced the development history of ACEM, the achievements of the Industry Research Institute, and the aspiration of establishing Shenzhen Institute of Industry Research of SJTU. He said that the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is one of the regions with the highest degree of openness and the strongest economic vitality in China, and thanks to the major national development strategies, this region is increasingly becoming an important base for collaborative innovation of industry, academia and research. He hoped that ACEM would combine its strategic advantages of “two types of scholarship, horizontal (academic) and vertical (industry), reinforcing each other and connecting theory with practice” with the background of innovation and entrepreneurship in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to achieve a new landscape of interconnected and complementary development of academic research and industry research. Chen Fangruo stressed that Shenzhen Institute of Industry Research of SJTU would closely follow the industrial layout of Shenzhen and also the Greater Bay Area in the future and make greater contributions to serving society, the government, enterprises, education and scientific research.

Jia Weiping, Academician of the China Academy of Engineering and Chair Professor of ACEM, said in her keynote speech on the theme of “Digital Medicine and Comprehensive Healthcare” that Industry Research should take its responsibility on close cooperation of the entire society, cultivating high-level inter-disciplinary talents for the country, and providing support for research on national healthcare policies, so as to promote the development of digital medicine and comprehensive healthcare.

Lu Ming, Distinguished Professor of ACEM and Executive President of China Development Research Institute, gave a speech titled “Centripetal City”, in which he introduced and explained the correlation between urban development and the protection of the rights of migrant workers from the perspective of socioeconomics, and analyzed the trend of future urban development and the corresponding solution.
Tang Jie, Board member of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) and former Deputy Mayor of Shenzhen
Tang Jie, Board member of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) and former Deputy Mayor of Shenzhen, delivered a speech entitled “University, Industry and Urban Innovative Development — Hypothesis and Evidence”, in which he demonstrated the contribution of scientific research strength in universities and synergetic development strength of the industry to urban innovation. Prof. Tang hoped that the development of higher education in Shenzhen could closely follow the city’s position in the national innovation network pattern, and it should reinforce the communication and cooperation with Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and other cities to enhance its openness and vitality.

At noon, the SJTU Alumni Workshop of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area was held. The participating alumni gave full recognition to the development of ACEM, and made in-depth exchanges and discussions on topics such as promoting industry research cooperation in the Greater Bay Area and serving the development of alumni enterprises in this area, and put forward valuable opinions and suggestions for the future development of the Institute.
Parallel session of New Energy Industry and Automotive Industry
In the afternoon, two industry community classes forums were held in parallel as a part of this summit, focusing on the themes of “New Energy Industry: Smart Energy and Low-Carbon Buildings” and “Automotive Industry: Transmutation of Automotive Industry in VUCA Era”, during which industry experts and leaders had profound exchanges on topics such as how to develop new energy industry and automotive industry in the context of carbon peak and neutrality.
