As social media becomes deeply integrated into daily life, concerns have emerged about its impact on user behavior and the potential unintended negative effects on well-being due to social comparison and pressure. To address these issues, platforms have started experimenting with measures to safeguard the mental health of content creators, such as adjusting the disclosure of performance metrics. While these metrics can help users gauge content quality, they can also lead to social comparison and demand distortion, as metrics may skew viewers’ assessments and exaggerate creators’ comparisons. This study investigates how changes in performance metric disclosures impact platforms and creators by developing a game-theoretic model that considers social comparison and the platform’s potential long-term loss from demand distortion driven by these disclosures. Our findings reveal that when creators derive significant utility or disutility from social comparison, increased disclosure can sometimes motivate the less effective creator to put in more effort. Interestingly, our analysis of demand disparity between two creators suggests that while disclosing more performance metrics may seem to widen the popularity gap, it does not necessarily lead to a greater disparity in demand. Moreover, we find that as disclosure levels increase, platforms may lower their commission rates and experience a decline in profits. Additionally, the optimal disclosure level decreases with the intensity of social comparison but may sometimes increase with the platform’s traffic revenue per demand. These findings have significant implications for social media platforms in using technology for social good and for regulators in responding to changes in disclosure levels.

Her recent research and work aim to ensure Al can better our lives, society and the world, focuses on understanding Al's broader impacts, mindfully applying Al and data analytics tools to advance business and enhance social welfare, and responsible innovation. Professionally, Dr. Chen currently serves as Senior Editor for Information Systems Research and Associate Editor for Management Science. She was also awarded the Dean's Distinguished Research Career Award at the W. P. Carey School of Business.
