Effective emotional engagement in sensitive contexts, such as psychological counseling, is a critical aspect of fostering meaningful interactions and establishing trust. In this talk, I will present my recent work on an emotionally intelligent conversational agent designed for mental health support. Our research considers a reinforcement learning approach that boosts state-of-the-art Large Language Models (LLMs) by incorporating the "forward-looking" capability. This capability is essential for the system to dynamically anticipate and adapt to emotional shifts in conversation while optimizing the long-term client satisfaction. Theoretical and practical implications will be discussed.

演讲人简介：

Dr. Tongxin Zhou is an assistant professor in Information Systems at the W. P. Carey School of Business. She joined ASU in 2021 from University of Washington. Dr. Zhou's research interest lies in the transformational impact of information technology, with specific focuses on healthcare and eCommerce domains. She studies individuals’ behavior dynamics in online healthcare communities, physicians‘ interactions with patients through technology, user-generated content on social media, and IT-enabled system designs that facilitate better efficiency and equity. Dr. Zhou uses multidisciplinary methodologies in her research, including econometric and statistical modeling, causal inference, machine learning, and economics. Her work has been published in leading business journals such as Management Science and Information Systems Research.
