In this project, we study the role of patent agents in fostering innovation. Using patent data and fim-level transaction data on the patent agent market, we find that patent agents help enhance the quality of patents. However, the quality of patent agents is heterogeneous. High quality patents tend to match with high quality patents. The reputation of firms' innovation ability can distort their patent agent choice. When a firm with low average patent quaity comes up with a high quality patent, it is more likely to hire a high quality patent agent. Motivated by these empirical findings, we develop a theory of patent agents to quantify the distortion of information friction on firms' innovation incentive.

Yizhen Gu is Associate Professor of Economics in the Peking University HSBC Business School. His research interests include urban economics, transportation, and applied microeconomics. He received his Ph.D. in city and regional planning from the University of California, Berkeley in 2015.
