The rapid growth of online food delivery services has led to a surge in the use of single-use cutlery (SUC), contributing significantly to global plastic pollution. This study investigates whether social norm-based nudges can reduce SUC consumption in the context of digital food ordering. We implemented a large-scale randomized controlled trial (RCT) in collaboration with a major Chinese food delivery platform. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a descriptive or an injunctive norm message. Our results show that both types of nudges effectively increased the share of no-cutlery orders, with effect heterogeneity observed across demographic groups and baseline environmental behaviours. Furthermore, we employ a machine learning approach to characterize consumer habit formation in this setting.

演讲人简介:

潘聿航,北京大学全球健康发展研究院助理教授、研究员。他本科毕业于北京师范大学,并于香港科技大学取得博士学位。加入北大之前,他曾于香港大学经管学院担任博士后研究员。他的主要研究领域为环境经济学、健康经济学、以及发展经济学,着重于使用因果推断(应用微观计量)的方法研究环境污染、政策制定、气候变化对于健康与社会福利的影响。他的研究论文发表于Science、Journal of Environmental Economics and Management,Nature Sustainability等经济学和科学类期刊。
