In this digital era, solution and service-centric industries enabled by digital technologies such as cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence are emerging and burring the organizational and industrial boundaries. Compared with the existing literature based on the product-centric manufacturing sectors, the dominant designs in this digital era have become more dynamic and complex with more emphasis on diverse application scenarios given the increasingly customized and comprehensive value propositions. To explore the dynamics of dominant designs in this digital age, we conducted an in-depth longitudinal study of the cloud computing industry in China. Through analyzing the process of industry emergence and the dynamics of dominant designs, this research identifies the decoupling of design dominance and elaborates on how the dynamics of dominant designs unfold and influence industry emergence. Our findings have implications for entry strategy and competitive strategy in emerging industries.
Yining Luo is a PhD candidate at the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM) of the University of Cambridge. Before joining the Centre for International Manufacturing Group of the IfM, she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Tsinghua University. Motivated by a desire to understand the contemporary phenomena of the digital era, which challenges the traditional organization and innovation theories that were mainly built on the patterns of the manufacturing industries, her current research agenda focuses on industry emergence, business/innovation ecosystem, and digital innovation and entrepreneurship.
